Fates of Munich's Nazi Era

20.01.2025

Numerous works of art were confiscated or stolen during the Nazi era, had to be sold under pressure, or were lost during the Second World War. Especially in Munich, a city closely associated with the rise of National Socialism, provenance research plays an important role in this topic. It's not just about the works of art themselves, but also about the people behind them. Who once owned the artwork? How and why were owners and paintings separated? What experiences did the works and the people experience? What connections exist? And how did the works end up in the Alte Pinakothek museum?

We have created a short audio tour on this topic in german and english for the Alte Pinakothek Munich's web app. Under the title "Art and Fates," you can now listen to four such stories. Some are also part of the project "Art, Looting, and Restitution – Forgotten Life Stories". For example, there is August Liebmann Mayer. He was an art historian and an expert on Spanish painting. He was also a professor at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and an employee of the Alte Pinakothek.
